چکیده

Cold-formed steel C- and Z-section beams are widely used in light gauge building systems as flexural members. In their applications members, mono-symmetric C-sections point-symmetric Z-sections often subjected to transverse loads eccentric the shear centre, leading combined bending torsion actions. However, research design methods for cold-formed limited. Hence this has investigated structural behaviour, strength of under action torsion. Twenty-four tests were conducted on simply-supported a mid-span load. Two two with different spans, each three loading-eccentricities. A special test set-up was developed simulate loading-eccentricities provide accurate boundary conditions. Numerical models tested then using ANSYS nonlinear finite element analyses including effects large deformation material yielding performed. The numerical results agreed well terms ultimate strengths, failures modes load-displacement curves. Finally from compared predictions current equation This paper presents investigation torsion, results.

3D numerical modelling of twisting cracks under bending and torsion of skew notched beams

The testing of mode III and mixed mode failure is every so often encountered in the dedicated literature of mechanical characterization of brittle and quasi-brittle materials. In this work, the application of the mixed strain displacement ε − u finite element formulation to three examples involving skew notched beams is presented. The use of this FE technology is effective in problems involving...

Local Buckling Tests on Cold-Formed Steel Beams

C and Z sections are two of the most common cold-formed steel shapes in use today. Accurate prediction of the bending performance of these sections is important for reliable and efficient cold-formed steel structures. Recent analytical work has highlighted discontinuities and inconsistencies in the American Iron and Steel Institute ~AISI! and Canadian Standards Association ~S136! design provisi...

Distortional Buckling Tests on Cold-Formed Steel Beams

Failure in cold-formed steel beams is generally initiated by one of three instabilities: local, distortional, or lateral-torsional buckling. For cold-formed steel joists, purlins, or girts, when the compression flange is not restrained by attachment to sheathing or paneling, distortional buckling may be the predominant failure mode. Experimental results on cold-formed steel beams with unrestrai...

On Cold-Formed Steel Construction

Powder-actuated (also referred to as low velocity or powder-driven) fasteners are commonly used to attach cold-formed steel framing members, usually a track, to a concrete or structural steel support. Although commonly used, their behavior is less well understood than other fasteners such as screws, bolts and welds. The AISI Cold-Formed Steel Design Manual does not explicitly address powder act...

Computational Modeling of Cold-formed Steel

The objective of this paper is to summarize recent research and experiences with computational modeling of cold-formed steel conducted within the author’s research group at Johns Hopkins University. This admittedly biased view of computational modeling focuses primarily on the use of the semi-analytical finite strip method and collapse modeling using shell finite elements. Issues addressed incl...
